I found (and was taught) that meditation was, on the contrary, a way to disconnect from the world: to turn the sense inward, and thus perceive God. 

Now I find no problem in connecting to the present: merging with the object of perception via an intensity which penetrates to the essence of things.

I suppose that the meditation did help. But now, the thought of focusing on the breath makes me shudder.

I find the remainder of your post interesting but addressing issues that have no relevance for me. I am probably not your intended reader!</description>
